Summer of 1000 Flowers

The ‘Flowers on the Tower’ project to brighten up summer 2021

Trumpington Stitchers are joining up with the TRA and other community groups to create some summer fun in 2021. Our plan for Stitchers is to make a whole heap of flowers to decorate the public art work known as Hopscotch, outside Trumpington Meadows School (see photo below).

We also plan to create garlands for the lucky passengers on the planned rickshaws (if allowed) for the Meadows 5th Birthday party, to decorate bridges, gazebos and anything else that stands still long enough.

The Brief

Our aim is to create flowers to be fixed to the Hopscotch brick tower at Trumpington Meadows by 22nd July (end of the school term), and to have the garlands made for 14th August (Trumpington Meadow’s 5th birthday). Number of garlands needed is pending but if you have any pattern ideas to share do get in touch on the details at the bottom of the page.

How you can get involved

We need all the help we can get to reach our target with flowers and garlands. At the moment, members of our Steering Group are focussing on trialling and testing patterns that may be good for local groups to use, but we encourage everyone to be as creative as possible with your designs.

Flowers can be made out of any material that is weatherproof and can be: knitted, crocheted, stitched, glued or tied together, and made of any yarn, recycled plastic, felt, fabric or anything else to hand. Creativity is encouraged! The only limitations are that you should keep the flowers free of text and be any size but ideally no bigger than a dinner plate at the very most!

We will also need help creating garlands – the details of this are still being ironed out but if you have any pattern suggestions we would love to see them.

Other ways to help

While we do need makers of flowers and garlands, we also need volunteers to help make the logistics of this project run smoothly. You can also get involved by:

– Publicity with local groups – are you part of a Trumpington group that would like to make flowers or garlands for the display?

– Help with putting up the display in July – we need volunteers to help collate and then attach the entries to the Hopscotch structure.
