KNITTED SQUARE – CORNER TO CORNER METHOD
This method allows you to use any size needles and thickness of yarn as you can measure your square accurately as you knit to achieve your required final size. I suggest yarn no thicker than Aran weight and no finer than 3 ply (double strands of 3 ply would be good), so that the thickness of squares is not too varied. I also suggest using needles one or two sizes smaller than recommended for the yarn, to produce a tighter weave.
For Trumpington Stitchers, we are knitting squares that measure 12cm. I have found that you need to have your knitted fabric measure 11cm at the point when you begin the decrease rows, otherwise the finished square comes out too large. If in any doubt, start the decrease rows a little sooner rather than later. If your square comes out too small we can always add a crochet border to make it fit. We can’t take anything off a square that is too big.
ABBREVIATIONS:
K1 – knit one stitch
Inc1 – increase by one stitch
K2tog – knit two stitches together
METHOD
Cast on 2 stitches
ROW 1: K1, Inc1, K1
SUBSEQUENT INCREASE ROWS: On every row, K1, Inc1 and then knit to end of row
When the edge of your triangle measures 11cm, begin the decrease rows
DECREASE ROWS: K1, K2tog, knit to end of row
Continue decreasing until you have two stitches remaining, K2tog, cut yarn leaving a long tail for stitching up (at least 30cm) and pull thread through loop to finish off.

There are several ways this can be done. I like the method that knits into the front and back of the same stitch. The first step is to knit into the front of the stitch. This is no different than a regular knit stitch. Just don’t remove it from the left needle. Now, place the right needle into the back of the same stitch and knit it again. Finally, remove the stitch you worked into from the left needle in the normal way. See diagrams below.
There are lots of Youtube tutorials you can watch for this and other methods, such as Make One (picking up loop between stitches) or Yarn Over . Google search if interested in trying different methods, any of them is fine for our squares.
K2tog – knit two stitches together
Insert right needle as if to knit into the first two stitches on the left needle. Knit these two stitches together. Be sure to knit the two stitches together just as if you were going to knit one stitch. See photo below.
Again, there are other methods to decrease that you can explore if you are interested – Knit one, Slip one, Pass slip stitch (K1 Sl1 PSSO) over being most common alternative.
