Thanks to the public art project, we were able to hold a series of tutored workshops during 2016 to help us develop a variety of different skills. We will be practising and developing these at our weekly Trumpington Stitchers meetings, where members share their skills and explore possibilities together.
PANELS IN PROGRESS
The Trumpington Pavilion by Pip Pye
With a background in science, I find diagrams appealing and chose the pavilion because of its angular shape and unusual design
1. First steps. I took some quick photos for reference and to look at the proportions of the building
2. I made some scale drawings. These are not based on accurate dimensions of the building, but represent the shape in recognisable form which will fit on the 30cm square.
4.Paper patterns I traced the shapes on my diagram and cut them out to use as templates for the different fabrics.
5. Mock up and Revising the plan I laid out swatches of fabric to give an approximation of the final picture. I realised that although I have omitted a lot of detail, the two original pillars ‘George V Playing Fields’ needed to be added.
6. Preparing the details Background for sky and road surface were prepared in the fabric painting workshop. Shapes for the building were cut using the ‘quilt cutting board’ to ensure accurate right an-gles and backed with ‘Bondaweb’. Following the machine embroidery workshop I made the pillars and notice boards to be machine embroidered into place and plan to use free ma-chine embroidery for the moon and hand sewing gold thread for the stars.
This is a night time scene, so the windows need to shimmer. I am using some black gauze over orange organza, and behind this a piece of blue shot silk from an evening dress I made a long while ago.
